Laura Põldvere

If so far we have always posted about Estonian artists who has recently released something, then this time we're introducing an Estonian artist who is soon to release her new studio album. We're talking about Laura Põldvere (born 30 August 1988), who is an Estonian jazz, blues and soul singer.

Laura was only sixteen when she took part of Radio Sky Plus' competition to find a singer who would take part of Estonian national final for Eurovision Song Contest, Eurolaul 2005 with Sven Lõhmus' song. Laura won it and participated in Eurolaul with a song named Moonwalk, reaching 2nd place. Laura also participated in Eurolaul with another Lõhmus' song, being part of girls group Suntribe. Suntribe won the contest with Let's Get Loud. Laura together with four other girls represented Estonia in Kiev. They finished 20th in the semi-final.

Eurolaul 2005 wasn't the last contest Laura took part. In 2006 she took part one of the most important singer's contest in Estonia. Most of Estonian well-known singer have compeated there. The song contest is called "Kaks Takti Ette" and means "Two Bars Forward" (musically ofc). If in Eurolaul, Laura sang a pop ballad and a cheerful 100% pop song. Then in Kaks Takti Ette she sang her favourite - jazz! Laura won the contest!

Sven Lõhmus was asked to participate in Eurolaul 2007. He said yes and came to the contest with Laura. The song was called "Sunflowers" and Lõhmus said that it was specially made to be similar with Moonwalk. Laura came third in the contest.

On September 1, 2007 she gave out her debut album. It was called Muusa (Muse in English). The album has 11 song, including Moonwalk and Sunflowers. Also songs "Muusa", "581C" and "Lihtsad asjad" featuring Raivo Tafenau were given out as singles. A music video to Laura's "Muusa" was also filmed.

In 2009 Laura took part of the song contest which replaced Eurolaul, Eesti Laul 2009 (Estonian Song 2009). Laura's song was called "Destiny" and it talked about future, technology, robots and all that stuff. Laura was the public favourite, recieveing the most votes from televoters. But the contest also had a jury. Concluding the jury's and public votes, Laura came once again third.

Later that year Laura gave out her second studio album named "Ultra". The album consists of 14 songs, including Destiny. Songs "Ultra", "Südasuve rohtunud teed" and "Pühakud" were also released as singles.

In the end of 2010, Laura's newest single "Võid kindel olla" (You Can Be Sure) was released. The song is involved with politics! Yes, that's right!. Although Laura has said that she is apolitical. Võid kindel olla is the slogan of Estonian Reform Party's campaign for the 2011 Parliamentary Elections which are held today (March 06, 2011). The song is played in the background of Reform party's commercials. Laura has said that the song was not written for the campaign. She has nothing to do with the song being used in political campaign and she doesn't get a single euro cent for it being used.

So this is Laura Põldvere! She's definitely one of the best Estonian artist. We love her to bits.. Laura is a wonderful person, though sometimes it seems that she doesn't have enough ambition to climb higher, which is sad. I hope she doesn't end up like Maarja-Liis Ilus, who today is only singing in musicals, being a judge in a tv show and once in a while recording a christmas album - basically just making money. Next time, when we're talking about an Estonian artist, it will be Maarja-Liis Ilus!

  1. I'd love to see Laura represent Estonia in Eurovision 2012, hopefully being brought from Tallinn again ;)
